Plans have been revealed to double the size of Hull’s Siemens wind turbine factory.

Two huge new factories and an office building will be built of the plans submitted to Hull City Council are given the go-ahead.

The east Hull site already employs more than 1,000 people at Alexandra Dock but the latest news appears to reveal an even greater commitment in the city from the German blade manufacturer.

One building could be almost 300m long according to documents submitted to the council which will soon be considered by the authority’s planning committee.

The new factories appear set to be built to the east of the re-existing factory and alongside the dock where the completed turbines are loaded up and taken out to sea.

As with the current manufacturing unit, it will be located south of Hedon Road, providing it gets the nod from councillors.

Speaking at a scrutiny meeting on Friday morning, council leader Steve Brady said: “The proposal to double the size of the Siemens factory is brilliant news for Hull and shows just how important it was for the council to invest £5m in putting in the infrastructure at the docks to attract the development in the first place.

“Siemens told us that was a crucial factor in their decision to come to Hull because it showed how willing we were as a council to work with them.

“What we are now seeing is a company with real confidence in the area and the local authorities which has led to further investment at Goole with the train factory which will bring even more skilled jobs to the area.

“Hopefully if this goes through planning, it will not just be the first bit of good news for the city because we are ready and prepared for more investment in this area in the future.

“There is a lot of work going on at the moment to make that happen and I think the government should look at Hull and support the companies who want to come to this area.”After an initial £310m investment to bring the green energy provider to the city, the first turbine blades rolled off the production line in December 2016 and hundreds more have been produced since.
