Marine tender opportunities spark Fairburns to join Brazil trade mission

Fairburns Group has joined the World Trade Centre Hull & Humber Brazil trade mission in a bid to increase its presence in the country’s marine engineering sector.

The WTC, Team Humber Marine Alliance and UK Trade & Investment are leading the June mission to the large port city of Recife on the north-east coast.

This special chance to access the world’s second fastest growing economy, with its extensive infrastructure development and shipbuilding plans, is being offered for less than £1,000 per person thanks to UKTI funding of £795 or each place. The trip includes meetings with senior business people and government officials.

A Brazil Briefing held recently at the World Trade Centre concluded that the effort of getting into the Brazilian market is likely to be rewarded many times over, particularly for engineering companies. Over a video link Chris Cobb, regional trade and investment manager at the British Consulate in Recife, said: “Engineering companies are quite likely to get successful very quickly.”

Hull-based electrical engineering company Fairburns, a member of Team Humber Marine Alliance, has already built strong contacts with tenders in place for a range of jobs including a refit of 80 barges at Marica, 40 miles from Rio de Janeiro.

Tony Nicholson, managing director, said: “Although it is still early days, we are very optimistic about the opportunities in the Brazilian marine engineering market and looking to build on this relationship we have established in the country.”

The trade mission will leave on Saturday June 22 and be back in England the following Friday. With the UKTI grant for qualifying companies, such as SMEs, the cost per person for flights, five-star seafront accommodation, and mission fee and translation services will be around £994.
