A delegation representing education and civic leaders in United States has praised the technical education being offered by the Humber UTC.

Neil Mello, Chief of Staff for the Mayor of New Bedford in Massachusetts, and Paul Vigeant, Managing Director of the New Bedford Wind Energy Center & Vice President for Workforce Development, Bristol Community College, toured the college as part of a wider visit to the Humber region.

The visitors were given a guided tour around the multi-million pound complex on Carlton Street by Principal Andy Downing and saw some of the teaching in action, meeting pupils and staff.

They were guests of the membership organisation, Team Humber Marine Alliance, whose chief executive and chairman, Mark O’Reilly, is a governor at the UTC. Mark says: “We had an itinerary which took in Grimsby, Hull and the UTC. This is a planning visit prior to a large-scale business and political trip in April led by the Mayor of New Bedford, Jon F. Mitchell. The intention is to potentially develop a “sister city” relationship between New Bedford and Hull & Grimsby.”

Mr Vigeant says: “We enjoyed the visit and were very impressed with the approach to educating students. The facilities here are outstanding. This is a special place, the students are engaged and there is a good vibe about the place.”

Mr Mello said: “It’s a model of learning which isn’t available to us in the States. We want to tell people back at home in New Bedford about this.”
